Summary
ChatGPT SEO comes down to three things: making sure ChatGPT can reach your site, giving it pages worth quoting, and getting trusted websites to talk about you. Allow OAI-SearchBot, write clear pages with sourced facts and real updates, get featured where ChatGPT already looks, and keep your brand details consistent. For content built to be cited, see our content marketing services.
When a buyer asks ChatGPT to recommend a supplier, it usually names a handful of brands and links to the pages it used as sources. If your brand isn’t among them, you’ve missed that buyer’s shortlist. ChatGPT SEO is how you change that. It’s the practice of making your brand and your pages more likely to be cited when ChatGPT answers questions about your industry.
This guide explains how to show up in ChatGPT’s answers: how ChatGPT chooses its sources, the one website setting that decides whether you can appear, and what makes a page worth citing.
How ChatGPT Decides Which Sources to Cite
ChatGPT has two ways of answering. For many questions, it relies on what the model learned during training. When a question needs current information, OpenAI says ChatGPT may automatically search the web. It rewrites the question into one or more targeted searches and sometimes sends them to partner search providers such as Microsoft. Its answer may then include citations, which are clickable links to the web pages it uses.
That second path is where ChatGPT SEO happens. OpenAI notes that results are ranked using “multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information,” and placement is not guaranteed.
Step 1: Make Sure ChatGPT Can Access Your Website
OpenAI uses a bot called OAI-SearchBot to find pages for ChatGPT search. Its crawler documentation says that if your site blocks this bot, your pages won’t be shown in ChatGPT search answers. If your team blocked AI bots in the past, check whether OAI-SearchBot was one of them.
Search crawler vs training crawler
GPTBot collects content that may be used to train OpenAI’s models, while OAI-SearchBot finds the pages that ChatGPT shows in its search answers. You can block one and allow the other. A robots.txt setup that allows search but opts out of training looks like this:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /
There’s one more check. Your website host or security service (such as Cloudflare) must let OpenAI’s search bot through, so ask your web team to check firewall settings. And since ChatGPT sometimes sends searches to Microsoft, use Bing Webmaster Tools to confirm Bing has your key pages listed.
Step 2: Write Pages ChatGPT Can Quote
Access alone won’t get you cited. ChatGPT still needs a page that answers the question directly. ChatGPT still needs a page that answers the question plainly. Here’s how to optimize content for ChatGPT, starting with the basics. For more detail, see our guide on structuring content so AI engines can extract and cite it.
| Page element | What to do | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | Answer the main question in the first two or three sentences | The answer is easy to find |
| Headings | Phrase them the way buyers ask questions | Match the searches ChatGPT runs |
| Facts and figures | Give the number, its source and its date together | A claim with proof is safer to cite |
| Comparisons | Use tables for features, pricing or options | Each fact stays separate and clear |
| Dates | Show a ‘last updated’ date that reflects real changes | ChatGPT favours newer content |
That last row matters more for ChatGPT than for most platforms. An Ahrefs study of nearly 17 million AI citations found that ChatGPT favoured newer content more than any other AI tool it studied. On average, the pages it cited were 458 days newer than those in Google’s organic results. If you publish original research, here’s how to get cited by AI with your data and statistics.
Step 3: Get Mentioned Where ChatGPT Already Looks
Your website is only part of the picture. Ahrefs analyzed the 1,000 pages ChatGPT cited most often and found that 67% were Wikipedia articles, homepages or app store pages, which marketers can’t easily influence. Only about a third were pages a brand could realistically get featured on, such as guides, reviews and news stories. Interestingly, 28% of these top-cited pages didn’t show up in regular search results at all. So ChatGPT isn’t just repeating what ranks on Google.
Researchers found something similar when they studied ChatGPT and other AI search engines in a September 2025 study of AI search engines. Given the choice, these tools leaned heavily toward what news sites, reviewers and other outside sources said about a brand, rather than the brand’s own content. That’s why brand mentions in AI answers often trace back to third-party websites.
| Where to earn mentions | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Industry publications | Expert quotes, bylined articles and original data |
| Review platforms | Genuine reviews on sites your buyers already check |
| Comparison lists | Being featured in ‘best of’ or comparison articles by independent sites |
| Partner and industry sites | Case studies, member listings and joint research published by others |
Step 4: Make It Easy for ChatGPT to Understand Who You Are
In the same Ahrefs study, homepages made up 23.8% of ChatGPT’s most-cited pages, so it’s worth making sure yours explains plainly what you do, who you serve and where you operate. Put this in written text rather than inside images or sliders, where it’s harder to pick up.
Keep your company name, description and services consistent across your website, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile and directories such as IndiaMART or Justdial, so there’s no confusion about who you are or what you do. We cover this in how to get your B2B brand to show up in AI search, and it’s also part of the credibility signals behind E-E-A-T.
How to Check Whether It’s Working
There’s no ranking report for ChatGPT, so build your own view of AI visibility. List 20 to 30 questions your buyers ask, run them in ChatGPT each month and record what comes back. ChatGPT can give different answers each time, so look at the overall results, not a single reply. Our guide to tracking AI visibility explains the method, and our Digital Intelligence service can monitor how your brand compares with competitors.
| What to track | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Mention rate | How often your brand is named |
| Citation rate | How often your pages are linked as sources |
| Competing sources | Which sites ChatGPT trusts instead of yours |
| Accuracy | Whether ChatGPT describes your brand correctly |
